Skiing

Juniors start season strong

On the last day of 2010, the Crotched Mountain Junior Race Team rang in the New Year by hosting its first ski race of the season at its home mountain with over 200 racers from across New England competing in the 5th Annual John Eneguess Memorial Race.

The race is named for Peterborough native John Eneguess who was a well-known ski racer. Eneguess competed in the 1980 Olympics. His brother, Sandy Eneguess and sister, Kathy, were on hand to present awards to the top 10 finishers in each division.

The Crotched Mountain team was very successful and swept the top three places in the girls J5 and girls J4 giant slalom races with first place trophies going to Ashley Humphreys and Anna Farrow while many other Crotched Mountain racers finished in the top 10 and received awards.

The Girls J5 squad (age 9-10) had six racers finish in the top 10 as Ashley Humphreys of Lyndeborough placed first with an aggressive performance and a combined time of 1:35.57.

Anna Farrow from Amherst led the girls J4 race (age 11-12) with two spectacular runs for a combined time of 1:29.44 followed by Rhiannon Allison of Mont Vernon in second place with a time of 1:31.69 and Amherst’s Alana Barretto in third (1:32.15). The Crotched Mountain girls took 17th-20th places with Kate Bermingham of Amherst, Sarah Tyler of Bennington, Amherst’s Rhiannon King and Erika Wentz of Nashua. Hannah Jorczak of New Boston was 28th.

The J4 boys did very well with RJ Humphreys of Lyndeborough taking ninth (1:32.30). Eli Tamok of Francestown placed 19th (1:35.72), Silas Howe of Amherst came in 26th and Milford’s David Spalding placed 29th.

In the boys J5 race Amherst’s Jack Ede rounded out the top 10 medals for the Crotched Mountain Racers with a time of 1:47.08. Ethan Tronkowksi of Milford was 14th and Camden Maley from New Boston was 15th.

The J6 team (ages 8 and under) saw Andrew Taylor of Amherst took home a third place medal for the J6 boys.

In the boys J3 race Mont Vernon’s Cameron Robertson came in 23rd with a time of 1:34.62, Collin Titus was 29th and Jasper Jones was 34th. Connor Bergin placed 39th in his first ski race.

Soccer

Former ASC player honored

Andre Simmond, a former Amherst Soccer Club player, was recently named as one of the top 10 U16 players to watch from the United States National Academy College Showcase.

Simmond grew as a player in the Amherst Soccer Club developing his skills and knowledge of the game. Following his path at ASC he went on to play at the Seacoast United program where he now plays on the Seacoast United US Developmental Academy team along with another former ASC alum, Marshal Davidson.
