Hollis Brookline High performs ‘Legally Blond’
HOLLIS – The Hollis Brookline School Theater Department will host four evenings of musical theater featuring “Legally Blond.“ Performances are 7:30-10:30 p.m., Friday, March 23 and 30, and Saturday, March 31, and from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in the Hollis Brookline High School auditorium, 24 Cavalier Court in Hollis.
This year, the students chose to do a reproduction of the 2007 Broadway hit, “Legally Blond the Musical,” which follows the antics of a heart-broken, ditsy, Delta Nu sorority girl, Elle, who chases her ex-boyfriend, Warner, across country to Harvard Law School hoping to win him back.
Along the way, Elle, played by Mackenzie White, a senior from Hollis, discovers hidden skills and abilities that unfold in series of ridiculous events.
Highlights from the musical include inappropriate advances from law school professors, courtroom murder drama as well as twists and turns in Elle’s relationships with Warner, played by Hollis junior Ludwig Ahgren, and his new girlfriend, Vivian, played by Hollis senior Kate Bolling.
Directed by Elyse Tomlinson, the production features a cast of 28 student-actors singing and dancing their way through more than 20 physical sets and 36 set changes to the musical accompaniment of a 21-piece brass orchestra.
Work on Legally Blond began in January as the actors learned lines and choreography. Meanwhile, musical director Julie Formadoni began working with her student-musicians and community volunteers to refine the musical score, which the orchestra will play live, stage side, during the show.
As February rolled round, the students began blocking the scenes and rehearsing, adding the accompaniment of the orchestra in March as they readied for opening night.
With sets in place, lines learned, scores mastered and dance moves perfected, the cast and crew are ready to wow audiences. And, Tomlinson expects a high turn-out.
“I am hoping to sell 500 tickets, each night,” she said.
Past performances, such as last year’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” received high praise from near-capacity crowds.
