‘Scenic’ road on warrant
WILTON- A request to designate Old County Farm Road as “scenic” will be on the Town Meeting warrant.
The Board pf Selectmen held a brief public hearing on the petition prior to their regular meeting on Monday. Petitions must be signed by at least 25 registered voters. Several attended.
Although Old County Farm Road extends from Burton Highway to Route 101, few people live on it and the central portion is Class 6 – that is, currently not maintained. However, bridges at both ends of the road are in need of repair or replacement and the entire road is under study because of that work.
Resident Fred Roedell III presented the petition. “I started this after what I heard the engineers were planning.,” he said.
Selectman Kermit Williams said, “The trees were really important to your Mom. This could be a tribute to her. It is a good thing to do.”
Chairman Matt Fish called the road “very scenic” and noted several others in town. He said on a scenic road, any work done by the highway department or utility companies which involves trees and stone walls must be approved by the Planning Board after a public hearing.
The state defines a tree as “any woody plant with a circumference over 15 inches four feet from the ground.”
The designation does not affect a landowner’s ability to maintain his or her
property.
