Speed limit reduced on Dutton, Curtis Brook

LYNDEBOROUGH – The posted speed limit on Dutton and Curtis Brook Roads has been lowered to 25 miles per hour, effective on Aug. 30.

At the regular meeting of the Select Board on Wednesday, Aug. 10, Mark Chamberlain said the issue had come up because of a building project on Dutton Road which has increased the traffic. He suggested lowering the limit which is currently 30 miles per hour.

Selectman Bob Howe said he had driven over Dutton Road, and agreed, “30 is too fast,” and noted that “several roads in town should be lowered.”

Chairman Fred Douglas suggested “all of the dirt roads should be looked at,” and noted the costs of signs.

After discussion, it was decided to change the speed limit on Dutton and Curtis Brook Roads since they are adjoining, and the number of signs would be lower. Speed limit signs will be placed at the junctions of Dutton and Center Road, Curtis Brook and Center Road, and Curtis Brook and Johnson’s Corner Road.

Both roads are narrow, winding, and hilly.

Douglas suggested several precautions be taken in installing the new signs to prevent theft, a continuing problem.

The other dirt and gravel roads will be evaluated. Unless noted otherwise, all roads in town are posted at 30 mile per hour.

In other business on Wednesday, the board conditionally approved a draft of the 2021 audit report, approved an electronic use device policy, and tabled a proposed cybersecurity policy until next meet for further study.

It was reported that a power line had come down on Mountain Road “and melted the asphalt” leaving several holes. Both the fire department and the highway crew responded.

The repaving of Cram Hill Road has been completed.

Town Administrator Russ Boland said the back wall of the salt shed has been replaced.

The next meeting was set for Wednesday, Aug. 24, 6 p.m., in the town office.
