AMHERST – An ordinary round of golf is 18 holes, but this was no ordinary game.
Multiply 18 by five and add 10 and you have what 58 golfers each did in a single day, all for good causes.
On July 29, golfers from all over the area started at 6 a.m. and played straight through to 8 p.m. during the Milford Rotary Club’s 22nd "100 Holes of Golf Event in a Day" at the Amherst Country Club.
The annual event is the club’s biggest fundraiser, and each year profits help the club donate more than $100,000 to charities, most local.
This year they set a record, netting about $75,000.
And this year they inducted their first "100 Holes of Golf" Hall of Famers.
Four individuals and the Amherst Country Club were recognized as major contributors to the million-plus dollars raised over the years.
Club members also sold 6,000 raffle tickets, and the winner of the $5,000 raffle prize was Share Outreach, the Milford-based charity that serves Amherst, Brookline, Milford and Mont Vernon.
To play that day, each golfer has to sell 50 $20 raffle tickets, a minimum of $1,000 worth.
"That is how we raise so much money," said Marc Chareth, a member of the organizing committee, in an email. "It’s wonderful the grand prize was won by such an important local charity that does so much good."
Mike LaVallee and the late Ted Jordan dreamed up this event more than two decades ago.
Fitz Fitzgerald was honored as the one golfer who has played in all 22 of the 100 Holes tournaments to date. Henniker Rotarian Joe Clement was honored for his many years of participation and for raising a lot of money each year for the event. This year he raised $12,800 in raffle ticket sales.
