DeBernardo helps Spartans to fifth at Invitational
AMHERST – Among the 13 scoring teams, Hollis Brookline High School turned in the top area performance, claiming third place at the Milford-Souhegan Invitational Wrestling Tournament with 130 points.
The Cavs celebrated three individual champs, placing behind tourney winner Coventry, R.I., and runner-up
Winchester, Mass.
Among the others, Milford was fifth, Nashua North sixth, Merrimack ninth and Souhegan 12th.
Milford heavyweight Dan DeBernardo was a rock, winning at 285 pounds in a grueling final with Coventry’s Kyle
Sanford.
The two probed at each other for two scoreless periods. In the third, DeBernardo chose the bottom and worked off the mat for the point and a 1-0 victory fo the title.
DeBernardo had three early pins to gain entry into the final.
Teammate Rory O’Connor was fourth in the division. Also for the Spartans, Ethan Briggs grabbed third at 152, while Dominic Goulette outlasted North’s Max Ackerman for third at 220. Greg Gagnon, Trevor Grenier and Deacon Currier had fourth place
efforts.
Souhegan High featured one placer, Victor Ceballos, who was fourth at 145.
Hollis Brookline’s Owen MacMillan took a stirring win at 220 pounds, first getting off his back in the title match to pin Memorial’s Ashoosh in a battle that could have gone either way.
He was joined atop the podium by a pair of teammates. Zack Brickner, like MacMillan, drove to the winner’s circle in style, with a win by fall in the final at 182. It was Brickner’s third pin of the day.
